Functional Impairment in Bipolar Patients in Remission： Implication for Quality of Life

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives：Bipolar disorder is a recurrent and long-term mental illness. There is substantial evidence that bipolar disorder is associated with significant impairment to functioning and wellbeing. The present study aimed to com- pare the quality of life (QoL) of bipolar disorder patients in remission with that of the general population., and to analyze the relationship between social functioning and QoL.
Method：The study sample included 37 bipolar out- patients in remission state. Patients were assessed with the Young Mania Rating scale for mania (YMRS) and 17 item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale for depression (HDRS). QoL and social functioning were assessed using the WHO Quality of Life Scale-Brief form (WHOQOL-BREF) and Social Adaptation Self Rating Scale (SASS). According to SASS score, patients were categorized into 2 groups：Symptomatic remission (SR；SASS≤32) group and Functional remission (FR；SASS>32) group.
Results：The group of bipolar patients reported statis- tically significantly lower score on the total score, psychological domain and social relationship domain of the WHOQOL-BREF. SR group obtained lower scores on all subscales of WHOQOL-BREF except physical domain when compared with FR group and the control group.
Conclusion：The quality of life of bipolar patients was lower than the general population. Among the bipolar patients, SR group patients experience lower well-being than FR group. Thus, functional impairment seems to be the significant factor to make a treatment plan.
